The 1890's were a time of great economic depression in the United States. Farmers just didn't have the resources to import or even care for their horses. Thus, a few great farms continued on but generally, this was a period of stagnation for the Percheron horse. People could not afford to care properly for their animals, care was not taken in breeding and colts were born that were not properly fed . Many great horses were passed into the hands of inexperienced and poor horsemen during this period, causing great detriment to the breed. Even importations from France almost completely stopped by the end of the 1890's, due to the economic depression (Sanders, 1917).

La Ferte (5144) Imported and owned by Oaklawn Farm. This horse reminds me of Justamere Showtime and all his wonderful sons. Up-headed, long-backed, with a head-set that speaks volumes about quality. Also, notice his nice sized hoof.
Powerful (6670) also known as Baylord (7519). The most important sire in Illinois during the 1890s. This photo was taken when he was 26 YEARS OF AGE!
